The Young Pretender
Red Deer in pastel/pastel pencil.
I don’t think I will ever get tired of observing deer, I just simply adore them. To me they have a somewhat magical quality.
Perhaps it has something to do with their timid, proud nature and their flighty free spirit.
Whatever it is, they have a kind of serene dignity which I find compelling. I just can’t help wanting to draw them!

Deer have such natural poise and elegance and have always held an affectionate place in my heart. Many happy hours have been spent observing them over the years.
In "Poised", I have tried to capture not only some of that delicate, proud beauty, but also the magical experience of encountering one of these exquisite creatures at such close range. Always an amazing privilege.
Ice Maiden

Snow Leopards are majestic, enigmatic creatures and have always been a particular favourite of mine. They are endangered in the wild and are notoriously difficult to locate, not only because of the few remaining, but also because of the remote terrain in which they live.
Stealth (sold)
Wolf in pastel/pastel pencil.Wolves have been unjustly persecuted for centuries. It is only in these slightly more enlightened times that they have become recognised for the skilled hunters and loyal pack animals that they are and efforts have been undertaken to conserve these wonderful creatures.
Eye of Sumatra
Tiger in pastel/pastel pencil.Of all the subspecies of tigers, for me, the Sumatran has something just that little bit special.
I have been fortunate to see Siberian and Bengal tigers before but it wasn’t until a recent trip to the Wildlife Heritage Foundation that I had my first encounter with a Sumatran tiger. There is a ferocity and energy in their being that sends a tingle down my spine and I was completely captivated by that awesome eye!
Prince of the Rainforest

Everyone loves the big cats. They’re so imposing and powerful, but as a consequence sometimes I think the smaller cats get overlooked, which is a shame because they are equally as beautiful and awe inspiring in their own right.
Contemplation

Antelope, gazelles and deer are so graceful and beautiful. There is something compelling in the way they move and hold themselves. An almost serene, composure that is both enviable and enigmatic. I’ve been lucky to see a good selection of different species, living so close to Marwell zoo, and have always been drawn to their beauty and dignity.
On the Alert
Golden Lion Tamarin in pastel & pastel pencil.
I absolutely love tamarins! They are the most characterful and amusing little creatures and I can quite happily sit and watch them for hours. I have been very lucky to meet some of them at close quarters thanks to Marwell zoo.

I’m incredibly lucky to live close to the New Forest, which is a beautiful expanse of ancient woodland, wetland and heathland.
Deer have roamed these woods for centuries and are very much an integral part of the Forest and its history. Many happy hours have been spent there throughout my life.

Fallow Deer

This watercolour, and the one above are studies of deer that I observed in the Forest on some of my early morning rambles. They are such elegant creatures and when in full antlers are a truly awesome and majestic sight. The barks and roars of the deer in rutting season is quite something!
