Ice Maiden
Snow Leopard in pastel/pastel pencil. 33” x 28” (framed).

Snow Leopards are majestic, enigmatic creatures and have always been a particular favourite of mine. They are critically endangered in the wild and are notoriously difficult to locate, not only because of the small numbers remaining, but also because of the remote and inhospitable terrain in which they live. As a consequence I always feel immensely privileged when I am able to see these magnificent animals at such close quarters.
The inspiration for this painting came whilst visiting my local zoo on a particularly cold and foggy morning in January. As always I had taken my obligatory trip to see what the snow leopards were up to, which is frequently not very much! However, the chill atmosphere of the morning seemed to have awakened something almost primal in them. They had transformed from their usual sleepy demeanor into these awesome, animated, playful creatures. Their sheer power and vitality was wonderful to behold. For a special hour or so I felt transported into another world of snow and ice as I watched them interact with each other, their breath misting in the chill morning air. I obtained some wonderful reference this day, but most precious of all, I felt that I had gained just the briefest of glimpses into their very private world.
I chose to paint this image, because I wanted to try to capture some of that wonderful vitality and power. Snow leopards are so exquisitely beautiful that sometimes I think it’s easy to forget just what a truly fearsome predator they are.
