Red Deer - "The Young Pretender" by Wendy Warren

I don’t think I will ever get tired of observing deer, I just simply adore them. To me they have a somewhat magical quality. Perhaps it has something to do with their timid, proud nature and their flighty free spirit. Whatever it is, they have a kind of serene dignity which I find compelling. I just can’t help wanting to draw them!

I saw this young stag at Bucklebury Farm last year. He was one of a group of adolescent males who had banded together as the rutting season got underway. There was a superb fully grown stag furiously defending his harem of females and they had all been driven away. I was particularly struck by this chaps rather regal stance and the lofty look in his eye. Aspirations of grandeur I think. Who knows, perhaps one day?
