Monarch of the Forest: Red Deer (Sold)
Red Deer in Watercolour. 13” x 16” (framed).
"Monarch of the Forest: Red Deer" has been sold, but it's sister painting, Fallow Deer, is stil available.
I’m incredibly lucky to live close to the New Forest, which is a beautiful expanse of ancient woodland, wetland and heathland.

Deer have roamed these woods for centuries and are very much an integral part of the Forest and its history. Many happy hours have been spent there throughout my life.
These two watercolour paintings are studies of deer that I observed in the Forest on some of my early morning rambles. They are such elegant creatures and when in full antlers are a truly awesome and majestic sight. The barks and roars of the deer in rutting season is quite something!
I have ambitions to paint the three main species of deer (Roe being the missing one here), again in pastels some time in the future as I think they are amazing creatures. However, as with so much of our beautiful British wildlife the problem is obtaining good reference material because they are so elusive! I’ll keep trying though.
