Prince of the Rainforest (sold)
Ocelot in pastel/pastel pencil. 27.5” x 22.5” (framed).
Everyone loves the big cats. They’re so imposing and powerful, but as a consequence sometimes I think the smaller cats get overlooked, which is a shame because they are equally as beautiful and awe inspiring in their own right.
Whenever I’m at the zoo I always take a trip to see the ocelots. Most often they’re doing exactly what a lot of the other cats seem to do... sleep! However if you’re lucky (or patient), they get a little more energetic, and that’s always worth waiting for.
Ocelots are exquisitely beautiful. They have wonderful markings, particularly on their faces, and their coats are dense and luxurious. They are incredibly neat and compact and just ooze power and suppleness.
In this painting he’s just raising his head slightly, tasting the air and getting a scent of what lays ahead. Perhaps a mate or his next meal?
I called this painting ‘Prince of the Rainforest’, because although ocelots can be found in scrubland, it currently thrives in the rainforests. With large cats such as the jaguar and leopard inhabiting rainforests too ‘prince’ seemed like an appropriate honour.
