Hunting Dogs - He Ain't Heavy by Wendy Warren

Hunting Dogs detail. He Ain't Heavy by Wendy Warren

In 2010 I had the amazing experience of traveling to the Selous game reserve in Tanzania on safari. I saw many wonderful creatures during my brief visit, but the one species that I had quietly hoped to see above all others was the African Hunting Dog, or Painted Dog as they are commonly known.

I knew the chances were slim as these stunning creatures are seriously endangered in the wild and are notoriously elusive. I'm sure then, that you can imagine my delight when we were fortunate enough to have precious encounters with two individual packs!

These particular dogs were in a pack of about ten or so. It was the middle of the day and we found them lazing in a hollow under the shelter of some trees. Despite the intense heat of the day many of them were still bundled up together, sprawling over each other in the social manner that these fantastic dogs are so well known for. As I sat watching them, one lifted his head, (squashing his companion in the process) and looked straight at me! For the briefest of moments I experienced an incredible thrill as I looked deep into the eyes of this beautiful and much maligned creature.

Hunting dogs have a strong social bond and pack members work together as a unit in all aspects of their life. Only the alpha male and female will mate but other members of the pack (including the males), will help in caring for the pups.

They have a much deserved reputation as formidable hunters and are renowned for their incredible skill and team work when chasing down prey. However, sadly due to loss of huntings lands and the restriction of movement of their prey, they are now one of Africa's most endangered predators.

Whilst I was contemplating painting this picture, (one I had known I would do from the very moment I looked into his eyes!), I heard on the radio the song 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother' and instantly it struck a cord with me about the relationship and strong dependency these wonderful creatures have upon each other and that was it, I had my title! I hope you enjoy the painting.
